Mary Lou is not only a master of college recruiting and all things golf, but also a leader who embodies authenticity, generosity, and genuine care for others. She leads by example, helping her players build meaningful relationships, develop confidence, and approach life with curiosity and gratitude. She encourages her players to work hard, build authentic connections, appreciate the value of travel and new perspectives, and step confidently outside their comfort zones. Mary Lou doesn’t just develop great golfers, she strives to develop confident, capable, and well-rounded leaders of high character who are prepared for success far beyond the course.

Why the Best Coaching Isn't About Golf How do you describe someone who intentionally wants to be around ‘girls’ from the age of 17-21? The stage where the girls know everything? And everything is the end of the world? Who in the right mind would want to be around that?? I don’t call her my golf coach; she’s a Coach. Of course, we met because of golf but I don’t remember any swing tips I got from her during my years as a Husky. I remember LIFE lessons that stuck with me to this day and things that people respect and appreciate about me. She made me a better citizen to society.

More Than a Coach: Shaping Athletes into Future Leaders I feel fortunate to have had Mary Lou as a coach for not just the five years while I was in college but also a friend since I graduated college. She is passionate about growth and learning and I always felt like we had the best, and most innovative resources at our disposal. In addition to being highly competitive, she understood the longer term goals of each one of her players and was able to support each one of us in those goals while making sure that we operated as a team. I also learned the value of balancing process goals with results, and I think Mary Lou helped shaped the way that philosophy worked for our team. I feel lucky to have a college coach that knew that the role isn’t just telling players what to do, but to help shape and develop players into young adults by finding out what works for them.
